This is the perfect hedgehog shelter for the cold months, with a baffled entrance to prevent wind and rain directly affecting the hibernating animals. The hedgehogs have the full internal base of the planter to use to protect themselves; the bigger the planter, the larger the space.

A damp proof membrane forces any water falling into the planted space on top to exit through the wood at the sides. This is carefully hidden from view, meaning the planter itself still looks great.
